SHAPING OUR COLLECTIVE FUTURE
For nearly three decades members of our Firmitas team have cultivated a well-rounded national network of timber framers, artisans, engineers, structural design experts, preservationists, cultural entrepreneurs, and creative thinkers. Centered in western Illinois, Firmitas is a leader in structural timber, historic preservation, and timber-centric project development. We're a diverse team of MAKERS + DOERS who believe in building and preserving with positive impact – honoring communities, celebrating history, and embracing innovation.
We are engaged –
Our team members attend and speak at conferences, workshops, and universities worldwide; addressing building conservation, preservation topics, methodology, and wood science/industry development. Firmitas is uniquely qualified to assist our clients in the development of a project to accomplish their objectives in a mindful way.
The name FIRMITAS –
Writing near the end of the first century B.C.E., Roman architect Vitruvius Pollio outlined three elements necessary for a well-designed building: firmitas, utilitas, and venustas. Firmitas describes the firmness or physical strength securing the building's structural integrity.
We partner with clients of vision, who have an interest in creating and maintaining legacy. Our clients understand the power of connection to place – the benefits and change investment in local economy can bring through preserving and building for family and the future.
ORGANIZATION
Our team is long on practical experience, further supported by both academic achievements and extensive ongoing professional in-service training. Key members of our team have been leading projects for 20+ years and supplement theoretical studies with hundreds of hands-on practice.
All principals have been integral and active members of the Timber Framers Guild (the most influential organization dedicated to the study of heavy timber and traditional timber framing in North America) - serving variously as President, Director(s), Project Managers, Instructors, Presenters, Authors; or recognized Journey Workers and Apprentices with the TFG Apprenticeship Training Program, which is recognized by US Dept of Labor.
In-service training occurs at TFG Conferences and Workshops, held multiple times a year with an evolving instructor cadre addressing both contemporary and historical best practices. Focus gatherings of engineering and traditional timber framing dive deeper into topics of interest for members.
Our team contributes often to TFG and other industry related publications and webinars. We contribute to professionally recognized organizations by sharing knowledge of timber frame structures from around the world– and in evolving technologies related to heavy timber construction.
